What's the riding like?
Superb! It's great for many cycling disciplines especially cross country mountain biking and road cycling on the most famous of Pyrenean mountains.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
The area is blessed with hundreds of kilometres of mountain bike trails. Many of the trails have been identified and waymarked by the local authority and have been broken down into 23 circuits which have been designated into four categories:
Green very easy
3 circuits ranging from 8km to 11km.
Almost flat, non-technical riding, little harder than riding to the shops.
Blue easy
10 circuits ranging from 9km to 23km.
Gentle routes with no difficult technical sections.
Red difficult
5 circuits ranging from 10km to 28km.
Some moderate and difficult technical sections.
Black very difficult
5 circuits ranging from 12km to 32km.
A good level of off-road biking experience is required, expect high-level technical sections.
These circuits are only the tip of the iceberg, we will continue to identify and waymark trails of our own to expand and diversify the riding available to our guests. And in due course more trail photos to show what's available.
We can tailor rides to your requirements; be they accompanied rides, following GPS directions or self-led using maps and compasses supplied, all abilities can be catered for.
ROAD RIDING
For the road riders among you some of the best riding in Europe is available from the door step. We are situated just 10km from the start of the climb to Col d'Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet with many other cols and mountain roads offering fantastic views nearby.
We do have a small number of road bikes for hire and can access more on request, or bring your own.
The Tour de France passes through the Pyrenees most years in July and as a consequence rooms are booked up early. Transport can be arranged to reach some stages that are further afield. But we highly recommend using your bike to view the stages as traffic and parking can be a challenge. For 2009 the tour ascends the Col d'Aspin then descends in the direction of Bagneres, at the village of St. Marie de Campan it takes a sharp left up the 17km Col du Tourmalet. In 2008 the Tour passed right by our front door and up the Tourmalet. We rode with guests halfway up the Col to find a fantastic spot with far reaching views to the valley below and the summit ahead.
Notes: Ensure that you come equipped to cope with changeable mountain weather.
